Maintenance II/Water & Wastewater Operator

GENERAL SUMMARY:  Under the general supervision of the Facilities Director, responsible for maintaining and repairing buildings, grounds, and equipment at MNH/ALF.  Also performs technical and maintenance functions associated with the wastewater treatment facility in the absence of the Chief Operator. 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs building maintenance, repair, and renovations, including carpentry, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, and painting work.
  • Shovels snow and removes ice from walkways and sidewalks; spreads chemicals for sand and ice control; operates a snow plow for snow removal from roadways.
  • Installs, repairs, replaces, and renovates plumbing and electrical fixtures and broken equipment, including gym equipment, bunks, and mirrors.
  • Performs routine and unscheduled maintenance on boiler, pumps, generators, and other County equipment.
  • Ensures safety precautions are followed at all times during the performance of work duties.
  • May be responsible for the efficient and effective operations of the water and wastewater treatment plant during the absence of the Chief Operator.
  • Acquires appropriate wastewater samples and conducts laboratory test procedures, as required and in accordance with state and federal permit requirements.
  • Monitors and adjusts control apparatus and laboratory testing equipment in accordance with appropriate procedures.
  • Inspects Water and Wastewater Plant equipment and machinery, making adjustments as needed and performs proper cleaning and maintenance tasks.
  • Maintains operations, maintenance logs and records for treatment works in a classification consistent with the grade.

 SKILLS/EXPERIENCE/TRAINING REQUIRED:

  • Duties require knowledge of mechanical, plumbing, electrical, maintenance work, and wastewater treatment systems and operations equivalent to completion of a high school diploma.
  • Must possess a valid State of New Hampshire driver’s license.
  • Must possess a Grade I Wastewater Treatment License, or agree to acquire a Grade I Operator in Training certification within 12 months of position acceptance
  • Working knowledge of the methods, work standards, practices, tools, and materials used in the mechanical, plumbing, and electrical trades.
  • Skill in the use of tools and equipment necessary to perform general mechanical, plumbing, and electrical maintenance and repairs.
  • Ability to inspect a wide variety of electrical, plumbing, and mechanical equipment and fixtures to determine defects and needed repairs.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude.
  • Have knowledge of or ability to gain knowledge of proper procedures for effective operation of the wastewater treatment systems.
  • Have knowledge of or ability to gain knowledge of the expected efficiencies of each unit’s operation and process in the wastewater system and how to monitor the units.
  • Have knowledge of or ability to gain knowledge of the safety hazards associated with wastewater treatment.
